NYC will play host to Full Figured Fashion Week (FFF week) – June 16th- 18th the big apple will roll out the royal carpet a bevy of curvy beauties and some of the nation’s top experts in everything for the luxury sized woman. Sonsi Woman is one of the title sponsors for the event and if you are size 12 or above, check out the site! They offer a wide range of designers who feature haute fashion for the curvier woman.

The week will consists of a runway competition, shopping crawls, a series of panels and culminates in an award show where the best and brightest in all things curvy will be acknowledged for their work in the plus community.

Prom Chic- Simple, Edgy, Elegant

Recently one of my readers hit me up with questions on how to appropriately accessorize her prom look. My advice is always LESS is MORE -you should wear your clothes not the other way around. The most important advice I can offer is no matter what, you should be comfortable. If you have to spend the entire evening pulling down a dress that feels a wee bit too short, or walking on uncomfortable shoes your dream night could most certainly turn into a nightmare.

The Dress- While your dress will certainly be the focal point of your ensemble, it is important to remember that edgy chic means choosing colors that compliment you and don’t worry about trying to coordinate/match every accessory with your dress.

The Shoes- I personally love shoes that offer an exclamation point to an ensemble versus matching. For example if you are going with a vibrant purple dress, consider wearing nude shoes as a compliment. Matching your shoes to your dress is something your grandmother likely would have done so try to avoid doing this at all cost.

The Accessories- again less is more. If you opt to wear dangling earrings, you run the risk of being over-accessorized if you wear a necklace so be careful when choosing your prom accessories.

The Make-up- I love a smoky eye! So if you opt for a smoky eye, go nude on the lips. I also prefer a vibrant shade of nail color that accents/compliments your dress versus matching your look.

Paula Patton is a certifiable MILF and this Mama’s Day she stars in the highly anticipated movie Jumping the Broom- I had the distinct pleasure of previewing the movie on Valentine’s Day and trust me when I tell you this is the perfect film for you and mom!

Paula Patton plays the breathtakingly beautiful Sabrina Watson from an upper middle class family and she is set to marry the thoroughly delectable Laz Alonso who hails from the other side of the tracks. The entire film unfolds during the couple’s wedding weekend which takes place on the uber upper crust Martha’s Vineyard. The ensemble class also includes Loretta Divine, Angela Bassett and Meagan Good. Trust me when I tell you that mama won’t be disappointed when you treat her to this film on Sunday!

Paula Patton Movie Premier- Get the look:

Sam Fine created the beautiful neutral look for Paula Patton for the LA Premier of the movie- here’s an overview of her gorgeous look:

SKIN: I began dabbing COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Concealer in Light directly underneath her eyes, closest to the lashline to highlight and conceal. Then, I used my fingers to apply COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Liquid Makeup to unify varied tones and give her skin a flawless, yet natural-looking finish. After applying foundation and setting with powder, I used COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Mineral Bronzer in Light Bronze to add luminosity and dimension to the skin. I often suggest using bronzer as blush, but this time I opted for a pop of color using COVERGIRL Cheekers Blush in Classic Pink.

EYES: I decided to go for a clean eye and well-defined eyebrow. Whenever I address brows, I always begin by using COVERGIRL Professional Natural Lash Clear Mascara to groom the brow and hold it in place. Then, I gently stroke pencil through the brow with a pencil a shade lighter than the hair, so it never looks drawn on. I played up Paula’s eyes using liner and lots of mascara. I used COVERGIRL LineExact Liquid Liner in Very Black to draw a fine line that wasn’t overly dramatic, then added a few coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion Mascara to upper lashes to make eyes appear “lifted”.

LIPS: Lastly, I chose COVERGIRL Queen Collection Lip Color in PowderPuff Pink to complete this feminine, fresh look.

Earlier this month the bootylicious one appeared in Roberto Cavalli drag in what appeared to be either a photo shoot for her upcoming album cover or a video; well music industry insiders are indicating that after hearing 6 preliminary tracks from her latest project that her work is “groundbreaking”. Sony Music head Denis Handlin indicated that “she has gone to another level”.

Paris Fashion Week- Chloe Fall, 2011

Paris Fashion Week is in full swing and yesterday the catwalk of the Jardin des Tuileries was graced with the Chloe presentation. The collection was replete with snake skin and menswear inspired trousers seemed to be de rigueur for the presentation.

My favorite look was a leather ensemble with the most buttery soft, mahogany leather pants that completed the look.

The make-up featured was hippie inspired chic and the models were even given freckles to provide a sun-kissed glow.

The other highlight of the collection was the handbags which have catapulted Chloe to an iconic level.

Menswear chic with a snakeskin twist will be in your wardrobe if Chloe has any say in the matter.

DC Fashion Week- Recap

DC Fashion week was barely a blip on my radar but I decided to give it a try since after all the shows were practically in my own backyard. The week consisted of a combination of both runway shows and networking events and for me the networking was priceless.

I had an opportunity to connect with fellow fashionista's/os in the DMV area that truly have a passion for fashion.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Emore Couture who’s personality positively lit up the room, a huge accomplishment with so many of DC’s finest tastemakers making their rounds at the shows and events. He was accompanied by runway coach extraordinaire Naki Carey.

83rd Annual Oscars- Red Carpet Picks

The 83rd Oscar’s were handed out at the Kodak Theater last night and though the general consensus was the show could have replaced Ambien with its dull moments and lackluster hosts, the red carpet was definitely something to see. Here are some of my favorite highlights:

The red carpet was complete with well, lots of red dresses. Sandra Bullock gets an A for her choice of a crimson Vera Wang gown. Host Anne Hathaway and a newly slim and trim Jennifer Hudson also donned red for their red carpet walk.

Shimmering gowns were a big trend last night and both Hillary Swank and Gwyneth Paltrow get high marks for executing this look flawlessly.

Halle Berry was perfection in nude last night. I loved everything about her look and she gave a very heartfelt tribute to the late great Lena Horne who passed in 2010.

Michelle Williams looked amazing in Chanel and her platinum pixie cut was one of her best accessories.

I loved her in the Lanvin tuxedo- she was chic, elegant and edgy all at the same time.

Iman the fashion icon

For me the Somalian beauty has always been a symbol of black beauty. She was "discovered" in 1976 by an American photographer while still at university and the rest as they say is fashionable black history.

This year the beauty was acknowledged by the CFDA as a fashion icon and award that is granted based on having a fabulous sense of style. Iman is the first black woman to be honored with this distinction.

Sleek and chic with a neutral palette best describes the Academy of Art presentation. The collection covered a range of looks from futuristic leather to bohemian layers and all manner of haute fell in between.

The leather looks brought to mind Judy Jetson as she covers Vogue magazine with just a bit of S and M thrown in for edgy measure- this new and improved Judy just a little naughty as the low cut leather looks gave up just enough to be simultaneously chic and sexy

With all of the frenzy surrounding Grammy related and fashion week tweets, there was a very subtle fashionable version of the "Apprentice" taking place in the twitterverse. Apparently Marc Jacobs is seeking someone to take over the helm of Marc Jacob’s International as Director of Social media- the catch? No resumes are required, in fact, the designer tweeted that he wanted to be entertained in 140 characters or less- that’s right- the ideal candidate simply need to have an in-depth knowledge of the brand and be able to relay their qualifications in a tweet. Apparently relocation will be provided and the position offers a ‘generous’ salary.

Charlotte Ronson’s collection always offers a bit of edge and the fall 2011 collection was no exception.
Fall is the time to play dress up donning heavy wools, body skimming sweaters and of course layers. The Ronson collection added a mix what promises to be this seasons chicest layers and the collection can best be described as Haute Hippie goes Upper East Side.

The incorporation of hole-filled tights with the shortest of mini-skirts only added to the allure of the presentation.

New York Fashion Week Costello Tagliapietra Fall 2011, RTW

The "lumber jack" designers truly did their thing with their New York Fashion Week Fall RTW collection. The jersey dresses that seem to be a staple in their collections were back and I loved the use of color!

Many of the fall/winter collections offer up a neutral palette but Costello Tagliapietra added autumnal shades of orange and even bright yellow. Though there were some neutral pieces added for good measure the bulk of the collection offered welcome color that will warm even the coldest fashionista come fall.

Fashionable Black History-Ann Lowe

As a handful of African-American designers prepare to showcase their vision during the highly anticipated New York Fashion week, this month in particular , they need to pay homage to one of the first African American designers- Ann Lowe born in 1899 in Alabama studied design on New York fashionable Madison Ave at the S.T. Taylor Design School in New York. Though she was largely ignored by her white classmates in design school, Lowe continued to blaze trails having designed for the upper echelon of NY society including The Vanderbilt’s and Rockefellers.

Her other high society client included none other than Jacqueline Bouvier as Lowe was the creative force behind the gown Jacqueline wore when she wed John Kennedy. Her impressive career includes having her work featured in the Mecca of fashionista’s shopping destinations including both Saks Fifth Avenue and Bendels

As we watch the visions of African-Americans being featured on the upcoming coveted NY fashion week, we also need to click our stilettos in honor of Ms. Ann Lowe.

Fashionistas around the globe are going through their many preparations for New York Week and I can only imagine the hectic frenzy the designers face as they nip, tuck, sew and make last minute selections of models that will bring their creations to life.

One of the shows I am particularly excited to see is the Academy of Art School of Fashion which will feature designs from several of their students.

For the first time there was a woman on screen who liked like our mothers or aunties. She had beautiful soulful eyes and though we may have been clueless about the plot, or story line we fell in love with Billy Dee when he delivered the line “Success is nothing without someone you love to share it with”- and the clothes? Well, they took our breath away.

Do you ever find yourself constantly buying make-up and never using it? Or perhaps your issue is while perusing through your cosmetic bag you notice almost every single lipstick/gloss is practically the same shade?

I know I have been guilty of not only overspending on products that expired, or went unused, at one point my make-up bag contained 5 variations of the same shade of pink gloss.

I have reached the conclusion that like many women, I am a creature of habit when it comes to my make-up routine. I step out of my comfort zone every once in a while... for example I adore MAC’s Ruby Woo lipstick and I also love a bold fuchsia lip for evening- however the journey beyond the familiar nude pink stops there.

Whether you’re in the same color rut or have a drawer full of makeup that you never use, every woman should have her “5 in 10”- meaning the 5 products that help her create a signature look in ten minutes or less.

Celebrity Make-up Artist Cataanda J indicated liquid liner, pencil liner, mascara, lip-gloss and face powder round out her flawless signature look. She lists MAC mineralize powder as one of her faves to give her already glowing complexion a smooth finish.

Here are some of my “5 in 10”recommendations:
Eyeliner- I am a huge fan of colored pencils and Avon has an amazing color glimmer stick that allows you to mix and match colors for your upper and lower lids- I use the starry nights blue shade to make my eyes pop for day or evening.

Mascara- I have lots of volume to my lashes already so I am constantly on the hunt for a product that lengthens- my current fave is Ultraflesh- not only it the packaging haute, it does an amazing job of giving me the length I desire.

Powder- I also truly love the MAC mineralize Skin Finish powder- worn alone, or over foundation this product gives a matte finish to my combination skin.

Bronzer- There are a few bronzers that are frequently in rotation from my make-up bag but one of my hands down favorites is from the Cover Girl Queen Collection. The line includes a wide range of colors and does a perfect job of giving me a warm copper glow.

Lip gloss- last but certainly not least, I am absolutely in love with Sephora’s Desert Gold shimmer gloss for everyday…. It serves up the perfect blend of rosy-gold and the $10 price point makes it a steal!

Yesterday was “natural hair day” in the social media sphere known as twitter. I’m not 100% sure what the purpose was however, the general idea was to demonstrate an overall appreciation for those who have chosen to wear their hair in its natural state. There were lots of tips shared on products, techniques and advice on transitioning from relaxed to natural. Sounds harmless right? Well, unfortunately the topic struck a nerve and created beef that reached east coast vs. west coast rap proportions! I swear the crabs in a barrel mentality came out and begged the question- why can’t we all just get along?

There seems to be a huge amount of stereotypes which have emerged from team relaxed and from team natural…. The major point of those who are natural being that relaxed hair somehow equates with self-loathing and the relaxed sisters stereotyping our natural counterparts as being incense bearing tree huggers…. This of course is ridiculous as we all know there is no one size fits all for our hair choices.

This week the Tourist starring Angelina Jolie and Country Strong starring Gwyneth Paltrow had premieres complete with all the red carpet fabulousness we have come to love from both celebs; Jolie and Paltrow literally exemplified the black and white of fashion each choosing very different looks.

Gwyneth donned a figure flattering white gown by Emilio Pucci with a plunging split that left very little to the imagination. Her Pilates or whatever it is the celeb has been doing to be able to pull off such a revealing dress has been doing wonders.

The Fashion Show Premieres Tonight

The first season of Bravo’s Fashion Show was on my radar, but I rarely tuned in and midway through the season literally forgot about the show. However the second installment of the show has true star power and features bona fide fashion icon Iman as one of the judges.

I have long since loved the Somalia beauty as she blazed trails in the fashion industry with her unique grace and beauty. In fact, the first poster I EVER purchased was not of some crooning teen heartthrob, no Iman graced my walls as a symbol of black beauty and fashion greatness. Amy Dubois Barnett currently serves as the editor in chief of the magazine and I can honestly say I have seen a tremendous re-birth of cool since she has been at the helm.

The first autumnal leaves have begun to make an appearance and at least in the DC area there is an undeniable crispness in the air. Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 Louis Vuitton

Paris Fashion Week remains one of the most coveted of all catwalks and the spring 2011’s collections are being presented now. Louis Vuitton looked to the Far East as a definite influence for his spring collection- with Asian inspired dresses and other Asian inspired pieces throughout the collection.

The other main feature from the presentation was a decidedly 20’s flapper feel as dresses with fringes made a splash on the runway. The red lip which is quickly becoming one of my absolute favorite make-up trends looks like it’s going to here to stay at least through spring.

Miss Tina comes to Walmart

Tina Knowles, a longtime collaborator with daughter Beyoncé on her Dereon and House of Dereon collections respectively is bringing her Miss Tina line to a Wal-Mart near you. The collection was originally featured on HSN and apparently Tina selected Wal-Mart as the retailer of choice for her collection because they were the only outlet willing to sell extended sizes up to an 18. The collection was created as a result of Tina Knowles understanding that not every woman is sample sized and just because you have curves doesn’t mean you don’t also have a desirable to be fashionable as well.

Tina Knowles indicated “I know from personal experience how frustrating it can be trying to find clothes that fit comfortably and that are flattering on me. So, I wanted to design a line for women that is fashion forward but at the same time addresses the problem areas that so many women struggle with. I am so thrilled to partner with Wal-Mart as it allows me to create the Miss Tina by Tina Knowles sportswear line for a very affordable price for all women of many shapes and sizes.”

Fashionable TV- "House of Glam"

I have very few guilty pleasures that extend to watching television . In fact, I am more likely to be curled up on my sofa reading my latest Kindle download versus watching TV. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule… Gossip Girl is high on my list of favorites for obvious reasons. The fashion featured in the show is always drool-worthy , the drama is a given and of course one of my favorite characters in the show- NYC! There is a new pleasure to add to my very short list of guilty pleasures and that is the new Oxygen TV docu-drama – House of Glam. The series follows stylists who work for the entertainment styling agency B Lynn Group. The “stars” of the show can best be described as frenemies who create glamorous looks for some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

If you haven’t tuned in yet, make sure you set a reminder for next weeks “House of Glam”. I promise this show will not disappoint the fashionista in you and will certainly provide a dose of drama to all who jones for the reality TV fix.

Skin Care 101- My visit to Cultura Med Spa

I have been seriously struggling with hyper-pigmentation, those stubborn dark spots that are the bane of most black women’s existence. I have been using several over the counter products to treat my hyper-pigmentation, however I felt like I needed to step up my game and enlist the assistance of a professional. Because my favorite dermatologist up and decided that he wanted to live in Florida full-time, I have been taking my time looking for a replacement and my skin has seriously suffered as a result.

Fortunately for me, I live in the greater DC area and even luckier, I work directly across the street from Cultura med spa. I have been quietly stalking Cultura after having read about Dr. Eliot Battle in just about every magazine I’ve ever purchased so I decided to give them a try. I don’t know what I expected after I booked the appointment however I was completely surprised that my initial visit included a personal consultation with Dr. Battle himself. He has a great testimony about how he decided to pursue a medical career at the age of 33 and let me tell you this man is incredibly passionate about ensuring his patients understand “skin 101”. My consultation felt like something between a biology class and a praise report session and admittedly I loved every minute of it! I came away with the E, A, C’s of skin care which essentially is the key to successfully caring for skin- exfoliate, retin A and vitamin c- these elements are the foundation of the products that are sold at the spa.

After my meeting with Dr. Battle, I sat down with one of the skin care specialist who performed a visia which is essentially a method for evaluating the skin and making recommendations on products and treatments. .As a result of my skin-care analysis my recommended regime included an exfoliating cleaner, vitamin A and multi-vitamin serum(s) combined with prescription strength medicine-Zianna and Pledget to combat acne. The spa incorporates an integrated approach so on my next visit I plan to try the laser treatment which is part of the complexion blending service.

After only one week of following my regiment I can already see marked improvement in my skin! I am truly excited to see the results after a few laser treatments.

Gel Nails- Are they worth the hype??

What are gel nails?

Gel nails are the latest trend in nail care and one of the selling points of this technique is that your manicure can essentially last for up to two weeks. The process of the ‘manicure’ essentially involves the same process as a gel overlay.

There are a few companies that promote the gel manicure process, however I opted to go with OPI Axxium since the OPI brand was familiar and I am typically very satisfied with their long lasting lacquer nail polishes.

The process

The initial process included a regular soak manicure- pushing my cuticles back, and buffing my nail bed.

After the initial manicure was complete the nail tech applied a spray to dry out my nail bed, which was very similar to the primer product that is used with acrylic nail application. After the spray was applied, she coated my nails with a very thin layer of clear gel, which required approximately 3 minutes under a UV lamp for each hand.

After the layer of clear gel dried, the tech applied a layer of what could best be described as polish which required yet another 3 minutes per hand under the UV lamp.

The last step in the process included a final thin layer of clear gel and you guessed it.... another 3 minutes under the UV lamp.

The verdict

I must admit I had reservations about the process from the very beginning. My initial red flag was there were very limited color selections, which was disappointing to me because one of the reasons I love the OPI brand is because they have such a robust selection of colors.

The other concern is I prefer to wear my nails naturally and as a result l typically do not like to wear any type of overlay. As a result of the harshness of the overlay, my nail beds were left very dry and weak and I disliked the manicure so much I only kept it for about a week. I had to get a paraffin wax manicure and use Sally Hansen hard as nails to combat the weakening of my nails.

If you typically wear an overlay then the gel manicure may be for you, as for me, I will stick to a regular manicure.

New York Fashion Week Mataano Spring 2011

After previewing the Mataano 2010 Spring line it is immediately evident why Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim the Somali twins behind the collection are the hottest new designers to watch. Mataano means twins in their native Somali tongue and trust me either of these identical twin sisters could easily saunter down the catwalk if they ever found themselves in a pinch and one model short.

Highlights from the collection included beautiful silk organza dresses, butter soft leather shorts in the palest pink and a laced- back tee that elicited gasps of delight from many of the preview attendees.

They looked to the dessert as inspiration for the neutrals that were prevalent in the collection, with a nod to 50's inspired style for the feminine, flirty dresses that rounded out the spring line. The collection will be available in the DC area at Carmel Boutique in spring.

Champagne and Shopping- Fashion's Night Out Re-cap

Last evenings Fashion’s Night Out was an epic event equivalent to the Super bowl of shopping for fashionistas. New York City was filled with groups of women (and men!) who shared in a collective, global experience which gave shoppers the opportunity to dine, shop and converse with celebrities and fellow fashionistas.

The buzz and excitement around New York City was tangible as people consulted itineraries and traveled from various destinations around the city. If there were any regrets it was the sheer volume of events made it impossible to hit all the fabulousness going on in every borough.

Lord and Taylor- the champagne was readily flowing, the music was blasting and the crowds were treated to cupcakes, decadent chocolate covered strawberries and advice from style guru Lloyd Boston; who was on hand to offer style advice to the masses as well as sign copies of his latest book The Style Checklist, the Ultimate Wardrobe Essentials for You. Lord and Taylor was a best kept secret because the crowd was minuscule compared to other events and most attendees were able to interact pretty easily with the fabulous Mr. Boston.

Lane Bryant- Though this destination was not originally on my itinerary, there was definitely a party going on! The DJ’s music was thumping and some of the industry’s leading curvy models were on hand to greet customers as they entered the store. I was pleasantly surprised to see the new DKNY for Lane Bryant in the store; the collection features curve- hugging premium denim and drool-worthy tops that you definitely want to be included in your fall wardrobe.

Macy’s- Kimora Lee Simmons was on hand signing autographs and ensuring her multitude of fans knows she is no longer affiliated with the Baby Phat brand. Kimora was just as charming in person as she is on Fab Lane and she truly seems to adore her fans.

Georgia- I ended the evening at the Georgia Salon, Indique event which featured the new fishnet Indian Remy Hair from Indique, manicures from Brooklyn Polish Bar and mini makeovers from celebrity Make-up artist Cynde Watson.

Unless you have been living under a very unfashionable rock, you know that NY Fashion Week kicks off this week and technically started with a huge public fashion show to commemorate Fashion's Night Out at the Lincoln Center. While many people are just beginning to scan their September Issues trying to determine what’s hot for fall, fashion insiders will be heading to the Lincoln Center and other destinations across New York City to find out what will be on trend for spring 2011.

One of the shows that I am most excited about is the One Stop Plus fashion show which focuses on women with curves. The average woman is a size 14 and finally the fashion world is taking notice by hosting the premiere plus size fashion show during the coveted New York Fashion Week. Tocarra who rose to fame during her stint on America’s Next Top Model will rip the runway and the red carpet will be hosted by Emme.

The show will take place on September 15th at the Center for Jazz at The Lincoln Center.

I know the folks at PETA are going a bit stir crazy with Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty’s decision to adorn a BlackGlama mink- however I am a fan of the ultimate in luxury fur and Janet Jackson has managed to look more breathtaking at 40 than she has throughout the entire span of her illustrious career. The billboard evokes the question- What becomes a legend most? Isn’t the answer obvious? You, Janet wrapped in that gorgeous fur is a great start.

H&M and Lanvin Collabo CONFIRMED

The fashion world was swirling yesterday with rumors of a potential collaboration between the couture designer Lanvin and the Swedish retailer H&M. Well this morning brings confirmation that they will launch a collection of menswear and womenswear for fall 2010. The collection will be previewed on November 2nd with items hitting H&M stores on November 23rd. I’m sure the Lanvin sale will rival the lightening-speed sell out of the Cavalli H&M collection for a few years.

Trust me; the launch of this collaboration is truly a fashion event not to be missed!

62nd Emmy's Red Carpet Remix

The Nokia Theater played host to the 62nd Prime Time Emmy awards and of course for most with a thriving passion for fashion the red carpet pre-show is always the highlight. How much did we LOVE last night's Emmy awards though? Jimmy Fallon was an amazing host and I was in stitches the entire night. From the “Glee” inspired intro to Fallon’s amazing sketch comedy I truly enjoyed the show.

On Trend
Navy was a trending color for the evening and was a very welcome change from basic black which can be both boring and predictable. The other big trend was the color white with Grecian inspired influence- Kim Kardashian wore this look flawlessly.
